Diet in Type 1. Diabetes

In type 1 diabetes, diet is integrated with insulin therapy (Ch. 9).

Fenugreek Seeds

Fenugreek (Sanskrit-Methika; Marathi, Gujarati, Hindi-Methi; Telugu-Mentikoora; Malyalam-Uluba) seeds are rich in fibre, reduce GI and contain a substance which lowers blood glucose level. They also lower the blood lipid level.

Useful in the treatment of diabetes, these are consumed, in equal doses, 15 minutes before lunch and supper, with water as such, after soaking overnight in water, or as powder with water or butter milk or may be incorporated in dalia, chapati, bhakari, parathas, dhal, idli, dosai, pongal, upama and dhokla. The dose is increased gradually, maximum amount being 25g-50g (2 teaspoons = 12.4 g). The dose of insulin or oral drugs has to be reduced if these seeds are taken. These can give rise to flatulence, diarrhoea or constipation. The bitter taste can be masked by adding them to dhal or wheat or jowar flour or by the use of sour lime. Fenugreek seeds supplement and are not a substitute for other forms of treatment of diabetes. Fenugreek leaves do not share the beneficial effects of fenugreek seeds.

Some Misconceptions

Contrary to popular belief, diabetes is not produced by eating sugar. The common belief that rice is bad and wheat is good for diabetes, is baseless. The carbohydrate content, GI and calorie value of wheat and rice are practically same. It does not matter whether a person with diabetes has rice or wheat, provided the total amount is taken into account.
