Planning a Diabetes Diet - Importance of Fibre

Fibre

The importance of fibre in a diabetic diet has been recognised recently. A high fibre diet reduces the absorption of glucose in the small intestine and thereby checks the rise in blood glucose level after meals. It reduces the requirement of insulin and oral blood glucose lowering agents and helps in the control of diabetes. It reduces the level of total and LDL cholesterol and triglycerides in blood. Dietary fibre adds to the bulk of the food and gives a sense of satiety, without consuming extra calories. It is therefore of value in the treatment of an overweight person, diabetic or otherwise.

Viscous fibre obtained from fruits and legumes are more effective than the fibrous fibre, obtained from bran, from the point of view of reducing glycaemia. Guar gum from cluster beans is a good source of viscous fibre. Fibre can best be taken in natural form. The other way is to take concentrated fibre in a capsule form or as a powder to be added to soups (Ch.11).

Persons not used to a high fibre diet may develop fullness of abdomen and bowel upset if they increase the fibre content of their diet rapidly. A person not used to a high fibre diet should increase the amount of dietary fibre gradually and will have to reduce the insulin dose with the change in diet.
