Diabetes Complications: Blood Lipids & Brain
Abnormal blood lipids
Increased serum triglycerides and LDL (harmful) and total serum cholesterol and reduction in HDL ( beneficial ) cholesterol occur in diabetes. This abnormal blood lipid pattern, is an important risk factor of atherosclerosis.
Blood lipid lowering diet
Blood lipid lowering drugs like statins, fibrates etc are available. All fats are limited to a minimum unless otherwise directed. The saturated fatty acids are replaced by monounsaturated (derived from nuts and seeds) and polyunsaturated fatty acids. For the nonvegetarians, helping of fatty fish is advisable. Soluble dietary fibre is increased. Intake of vegetables and fruits is increased in view of their antioxidant content. Coronary artery disease is less common in vegetarians than in nonvegetarians. Obesity should be reduced. Alcohol is avoided since it encourages obesity and increases the blood triglycerides level. Population studies indicate that total serum cholesterol of less than 170 mg/dl is advisable. Garlic may have a beneficial effect on some risk factors. Blood lipid lowering diet is beneficial even in an established coronary artery disease such as heart infarction and in the elderly.
Brain
The arteries supplying the brain may get narrowed or blocked in long-standing diabetes giving rise to transient attacks of less blood supply to a part of brain or a full blown stroke.
